"CARE has not only played a major role in my son’s development but has also helped my family move forward in life and come to terms with his condition." - Garreth

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism is becoming increasingly prevalent within the paediatric population, with 1 in 88 children presenting with ASD. Children with ASD experience difficulties in a wide range of developmental skills including sensory processing, pre-linguistic skills, cognitive development, motor planning, perception, concentration, behaviour, social and motor skills.

This condition is so heterogeneous and pervasive that it is difficult to diagnose and treat effectively. With the rising prevalence, the need for basic grade and advanced professionals to provide effective intervention for families affected by ASD, throughout the lifespan, has also risen.

"To our knowledge, CARE is the only school in South Africa, which not only provides a full-time combination of school and therapy, but also does so in a manner, which is sustainable and affordable to families. - Stefan and Michelle

It is with this in mind that we wish to initiate a regular, Professional ASD interest group. We plan to meet after working hours at the C.A.R.E. Centre in Dunkeld.

Some ideas we have for these groups include: journal article reviews, guest speakers, difficult case discussions, sharing of information from research, courses and conferences.

It is our belief that bringing parents together provides families with a means of emotional support and an outlet for concerns. It is with this in mind that we encourage a regular parent support group. The meetings are held after working hours at the C.A.R.E Centre in Dunkeld. There will be speakers to direct discussions initially and to encourage the parents to share their own journeys with ASD and to learn from each other with guidance from professionals.

"CARE is, without a doubt, a centre of excellence for children with Autism, and the therapy, teaching and love my daughter receives at CARE would not be available anywhere else in Johannesburg and most probably South Africa." - Cathy
